Message from the Superintendent
June 19, 2017
Dear Millwood Families,
Happy summer! I trust that all is well and that you all are having a great summer break. We are just closing out an extremely productive and eventful year, and are excited for our next chapter in Fall of 2017.
MELA closed out an amazing year by ensuring that 100% of our 3rd graders were promoted to 4th grade! Thank you to all of the teachers and support staff at MELA for making this happen. We also want to thank all of the families who supported their third-grader during this challenging year; it’s because of your support that they are the awesome children that they are! Parents should have already received a notice in the mail announcing the 1-year internship that Susan Baldwin, our MELA Principal will be taking next year. Ms. Baldwin will be working with High Tech High in San Diego, California to learn the approach that they use for education equity and project based learning. At the completion of her intern she will return to MELA to work with our team here to implement this innovative approach. Ms. Hightower and Mrs. Christine Harrison will work together as administrators over MELA in Ms. Baldwin’s absence.
Our Arts Academy promoted 85 8th graders who managed to amass 3 times the growth on our district formative assessment (NWEA) than all other 8th graders who take the assessment! We are extremely proud of the work that the Arts Academy staff has accomplished this year, and they are just getting started. Mrs. Candice Green and her staff have worked to increase student self-responsibility and involve students in decision making through out the year. Next year promises to be even better as she and her staff expound upon this year’s foundation.
Lastly, congratulations to the Class of 2017. Millwood High School graduated 47 young men and women who collectively amassed over $800,000 in college scholarships! The high school also worked on increasing student voice and self- responsibility by instituting a student leadership team led by Principal Petra Woodard. Our high school students also managed to win a Football, Girl’s Track State Championship and a Cheerleading National Championship last year, along with a host of other accomplishments. We are looking forward to what next year holds for our Mighty Falcons!
School begins August 15th, 2017. Please be on the look out for announcements from your child’s school. New students may begin to enroll on August 1st. We are looking forward to another awesome year at Millwood!
Thanks for all you do to make Millwood and awesome place to be!
